What streaked across the Russian night sky? (Video)

A strange object streaking across the night sky took residents of Kazan by surprise on Sunday and spread confusion over social media.

Their fears were quickly allayed when it turned out that the light streak was a Russian Soyuz 2.1-b rocket, which was launched at 12:46am Moscow time (21:46 GMT) from the Plesetsk test launch site.

The satellite will be part of Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), which currently comprises 25 satellites, one of which is currently undergoing flight tests.
