In addition, former test players Nuwan Soysa, Lanka de Silva, Avishka Gunawardena and other senior and renowned cricketers also participated. Minister Arjuna Ranatunge will act as the tournament advisor, while each of the other world cup team members will be the captains of the competing teams.
There are 18 teams that would be competing in the “My Dad My Super Star – Dads Cricket Tournament”, while naming of the teams would be based on schools. The tournament under the theme “To dad with love” is only open to fathers. The tournament scheduled to be held next September will take place at the Colombo NCC, Bloomfield, BRC and Colts grounds.
The organisers have decided to have the finals as day-night matches. Addressing the event Minister Arjuna Ranatunge said this would not be a mere single tournament, adding that this would serve to enhance the social responsibility of the players of the 1996 world cup winning team. He said this tournament would serve to develop the infrastructure facilities of the rural schools.
Expressing his views on the “My Dad My Super Star – Dads Cricket Tournament”, Ravindra Pushpakumara said that this tournament is an ideal appreciation for cricketing fathers.
“It is the fathers who play a significant role in bringing cricketers to the forefront. Hence we felt that we need to do something as a token of appreciation for these fathers. There are many of our players who represented the national team during our era who have not got the opportunity to engage in the game. We organised the “My Dad My Super Star – Dads Cricket Tournament” in a bid to engage all of these fathers. This is the first time such a tournament has been organised in Sri Lanka and it is bound to be a very pleasant experience for all of them,” said Pushpakumara.
The tournament will take place according to the Twenty20 format and a specialty would be that the cheer leaders would be the children of these cricketers.
