Sumathipala’s match-fixing allegation to boomerang on him? Featured

Former Sri Lanka Cricket president Thilanga Sumathipala has told the media that the first Sri Lankan players to be accused of match-fixing were Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva.

However, it was a committee appointed by Sumathipala himself that the two were cleared of the charges.

The International Cricket Council is reportedly looking into the matter, as questions have arisen as to whether Sumathipala had got them cleared intentionally.

Sumathipala appointed anti-corruption officer Desmond Fernando to inquire into Ranatunga and de Silva, who were accused of accepting 15,000 US dollars from Indian bookie Mukesh Gupta during the home series against India in 1994.

Eight months later, Fernando handed over his report, but by that time, cricket was under an interim committee administration, headed by Vijaya Malalasekara.
