Plans for Sri Lanka to host int’l golf events Featured

Sri Lanka is making arrangements to host international golf tournaments by 2020, according to former Sri Lanka Golf Association president Ana Punchihewa.

Punchihewa was also president of Sri Lanka Cricket when the country won the 1996 World Cup.

He told Sri Lanka Mirror that modernizing the Victoria golf course at Digana in Kandy to international standards would be completed in a few months’ time.

A 51 per cent ownership of the golf course is held by a private entrepreneur, for whom Punchihewa is presently the golf instructor.

Punchihewa said that with golf being made an attraction for foreign tourists, Sri Lanka would be able to add one more item to the Sri Lanka Tourism prescribed eight recreational activities they could engage in.

He said that around 2.5 million US dollars would be needed to hold an international golf tournament, adding that local and foreign investments for that would be found to create yet another income earning method for the country in two years time.
