Bandula says he hadn't misled anyone on Homagama ground

Cabinet co-spokesman Bandula Gunawardena today (21) stood his ground on the statement he had made on the proposed cricket ground in Homagama, insisting that he did not mislead anyone.

Speaking to media after the cabinet meeting earlier today, he had reiterated that the Government will not be funding the project and that it will be handled by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.

Noting that the project was initiated when Mahinda Rajapaksa was President but was later suspended, the minister said that construction of the stadium will not commence immediately.

Minister Bandula was quoted by former MP - Udaya Gammanpila as to the project will be funded by the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, the ICC had denied such claims.

Later yesterday, Gammanpila apologized for his statement that Sri Lanka’s biggest Cricket ground is funded by the International Cricket Council and said the statement was based on the information given by Minister Bandula Gunawardena.

The initial announcement made on Sunday evening with regard to the ground sparked social outcry and widespread criticism.

Former cricketers Roshan Mahanama, Arjuna Ranatunga and Mahela Jayawardena sharply criticised the move on social media. Their sentiments were also echoed by the elder sons of PM Mahinda Rajapaksa - Namal and Yoshitha.

Meeting with PM

Meanwhile, it is reported that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will today meet former cricketers - Roshan Mahanama, Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya to discuss the proposed Homagama International Cricket Stadium.
