Mathews reveals reasons for failure Featured

Sri Lanka’s former Cricket Captain Angelo Mathews claims the reason for the dismal performance of the team at the World Cup is the failures of the past.

He had said this in an interview with a newspaper.

Mathews had said that stability is vital for a team to perform well. Most of the teams that played for the World Cup have included the same set of around 20 to 25 players over the past four years.

He further said, “If not the team won’t be stable. If the team composition keeps changing from match to match, how can there be stability? This is where we should start. Since my departure in 2017, there have been around
six captains. These factors are what affects the team and this is a known factor.

If we are to move forward progressively, these are matters that needs to be ironed out. If we take current ODI team, all these players are capable of playing at the next World Cup. If we select a team of around 25 players and
train for the next four years, we can hope to be successful. If we are a bit patient and pull through the four years and put a good team together, we can be assured of success.”
