Sabaragamuwa Uni. student flees in Italy during sports event Featured

A Sabaragamuwa University student, who had gone to Italy to participate in the World University sports competition, had fled during the event.

The student was a member of the 100 meter relay and is a resident of Trincomalee. Having participated in the event, he had fled from the hotel they were residing in.

The sports officials in charge of the Sri Lankan team had lodged a complaint with the Italian Police regarding the disappearance of the team member, but so far no information has been found regarding him.

The sports event was held in Southern Italy from July 03rd to 14th, while 51 sports men and women had participated from Sri Lanka. Upon arrival the team officials had also complained to the Katunayake Airport Police
regarding the missing team member.

The Sri Lankan team could not win any medals at this meet, but in certain events they had managed to qualify for the second round. The event that the missing participant competed in, the 100 meter relay, they were placed 14th
with a timing of 42.13 seconds.

The world inter university sports event was represented by 118 countries with around 6000 participants. Japan won 8 gold, six silver and 5 bronze medals topping the list, with Ukraine winning five gold and 3 silver medals
and finished in second place. Australia won 4 gold 4 silver and 2 bronze medals and secured the third place.

According to Italian officials, with such a large number of sports men and women participating in this event, no other team member had jumped camp except the Sri Lankan.
