The minister made the allegation while answering questions raised by journalists after a religious function at Siri Sumanarama Purana Vihara at Walana in Katunayake yesterday (24).
He blamed former sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara for having introduced bookies into cricket.
According to him, the sports minister of the previous government could have had his shortcomings, but he never allowed bookies into cricket administration.
Ranatunga said that as predicted by him, Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh, and then to Afghanistan.
The game still can be revived by changing the cricket constitution and holding an election to elect office-bearers.
Until then, an interim committee should be appointed or former cricketers like Sidat Wettamuny, Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan should be handed over the administration, he said.
The incumbent minister has to take the responsibility, he said, adding that not just the captain, but also the selectors and the cricket administration were to be blamed.
He urged the president and the prime minister to pay attention to this matter.
