9 nabbed for stealing displaced milk farmers’ cattle (pics)

The Maskeliya Police had arrested nine suspects early this morning while they were transporting three dairy cows and two other cows in a lorry without a permit and in an inhumane manner, suspected to be sold for meat.

These stolen cows are believed to belong to dairy farmers in the Maskeliya, Samimale, Malliappu area, who were displaced due to the flooding.

The police officers who were on patrol duty in the Samimale area in Maskeliya, had examined the lorry on suspicion and arrested the suspects involved.

According to the Maskeliya Police OIC – IP Tyrone Ratnayake, four three wheelers in which the thieves had come in and the lorry was taken into police custody. The suspects are residents of the Gampola, Weligalla, Ulapone, Maskeliya and Hatton areas.

The arrested suspects and the vehicles that was taken into police custody are expected to be produced in the Hatton Magistrate’s Court today.
