Rs. 6 b PACS project makes a comeback!

Measures are being take to purchase a computerised medical imaging storage system from a foreign company at a cost of over Rs. 06 billion while such a system is already developed locally at a much lower cost.

The home grown product, developed by a team of local doctors at a cost of Rs. 900,000 are already being used in several hospitals.

It is said that the previous government too, had attempted to embark on a similar project with a foreign company but the present government had halted the project, citing corruption.

A Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is a medical imaging technology which provides economical storage and convenient access to images from multiple modalities (source machine types).

Electronic images and reports are transmitted digitally via PACS; this eliminates the need to manually file, retrieve, or transport film jackets, the folders used to store and protect X-ray film.
