Gen. election date to be decided after SC verdict

Director General of National Election Commission Saman Rathnayake says the date of the next general election will be decided after the verdicts are issued on the cases being heard in the Supreme Court.

Accordingly, the election will be held within 70 days from the date the verdict is issued, he  says.

However, it is expected that further discussions will be held with the health authorities on how the general election should be held.

Ratnayake further says that special attention should be given to the  safety of all the officials on election duty and that there is a high probability of the number of officers to be deployed at the election being increased as well as the cost of the election.
