Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has called for “proper police protection” and a “thorough investigation” after seven journalists in Sri Lanka's eastern region of Batticaloa received death threats on Thursday (23).

In a Tweet, the RSF said :

The threat was carried out in a handbill with a photograph showing the seven journalists and some of these leaflets were thrust under door of the Batticaloa press club office.

Krishnakumar of Independent Television Network (ITN), Selvakumar Nilanthan of Lanka Sri website, Punniyamoorthy Sasikaran, Kuharasa Subojan and Nallathambi Nithyananthan of Maharaja Television, Vadivel Shakthivel and Subramaniam Kunalingam of the Thinakkural newspaper had their faces circled in the photograph in the leaflet.

The photograph had been taken at an event to commemorate the founding editor of Sunday Leader - Lasantha Wickrematunga, who was slain in January 2009.

“These are the foreign tiger-funded reporters who publish news against the government. We will soon deliver the death penalty to them,” it had said.
