Make SLFP constitution democratic, president urges Featured

Before making a further democratization of Sri Lanka’s constitution, the SLFP should first make its own constitution democratic, president Maithriapala Sirisen has urged seniors of the party, ‘Sathhanda’ reports.

Accordingly, a new constitution is expected under which many domineering powers of the party leader are to be curtailed and decision making powers given to other leaders.

During the leadership of Chandrika Kumaratunga, the SLFP had amended its constitution to give more powers to her, and further powers were centralized during the tenure of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Set an example to other parties

Moreover, president Sirisena has informed the SLFP seniors that they should set an example to other parties by making its decision-making democratic.

Furthermore, attention of the elections chief is to be drawn to making other party constitutions democratic, with a mechanism to ensure same.

SLFP seniors have noted the president has entrusted the decision-making duty to its central committee, while giving a highest example by allowing its MPs to represent either the ruling or the opposition and also given them the freedom to criticize.
