‘Ceylon Tea’ brand is truly ambassadorial - Mangala

Finance minister Mangala Samaraweera says the Ceylon tea industry’s contributions to make Sri Lanka’s presence felt very strongly in the international arena with the credible ‘Ceylon Tea’ brand is truly ambassadorial.

He was speaking as chief guest at the issuance of a commemorative coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the Ceylon tea industry today (12).

The anniversary comes as the government is envisioning a high value export oriented economy in the medium to long term strategy for the country, he said.

Noting that the journey thus far has not been without headwinds, he said the journey ahead would also confront many a challenge, both locally and beyond our shores.

Hence, it is time that we may recalibrate our product and market development strategies as a matter of priority, said the minister.

He said Sri Lanka must continue to invest in product purity, environmental safety and labour standards, and must innovate and invest to create the tea based products that would appeal to the modern consumer.
