One year since Ravi lost portfolio, backbenchers want him reappointed! Featured

Several UNP backbenchers have requested prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to grant a ministerial portfolio to deputy leader of the party Ravi Karunanayake again, Sirikotha sources say.

They have pointed out to the PM that it would be very disadvantageous for the party to sideline Karunanayake who has played a key role in bringing the government to office and to keep the party strong in the Colombo district.

A UNP backbencher told Sri Lanka Mirror that it was unfair by Karunanayake that he was yet to be appointed a minister after the Marapana committee that inquired into the Central Bank bond matter had cleared him of any wrongdoing.

The party is at a big disadvantage in Colombo because it is without a minister for the district.

Karunanayake met the PM on August 09 and raised the matter, according to the UNP backbencher.

Told to leave portfolio for 3 months

He resigned on August 10 last year after making a statement to the House following a request by Wickremesinghe to leave his ministerial position pending the bond matter inquiry for a three month period.

He said he was not guilty to the charges, but noted that he would resign in consideration of the country and the party.

History will clear him, Karunanayake said, adding that there was a conspiracy to destroy the government and the party.

Following its inquiry, the Marapana committee cleared Karunanayake and recommended to the UNP working committee that he be reappointed deputy leader of the party.
