IGP obtained Rs. 12 m bribe from ex-Trinity College principal? Featured

Police chief Pujith Jayasundara has obtained a bribe of Rs. 12 million from a former principal of Trinity College, Kandy in 2008, according to a complaint received by the Bribery Commission.

Jayasundara was the DIG in charge of the central province when the ex-principal Robert Gilbert was deported by courts, but he had been in hiding in Kandy.

The complaint, lodged by one Nishantha de Alwis, says Jayasundara had obtained the money with a promise not to arrest Gilbert.

Despite the court order, Gilbert had come to Sri Lanka and attended the wedding of his son at a hotel in Kandy.

The bribe was given by cash cheque dated 20 August 2008 to Jayasundara from account no. 180837076 maintained at the HNB Kandy branch by persons connected to Trinity College.

However, the IGP has refuted the charge and is quoted by ‘Ravaya’ as saying that he wants the complaint investigated.

He adds that he does not even have a house of his own.
