Mars reaches closest point to earth tomorrow

The Red planet or Mars will travel closest to earth tomorrow (31) after 15 years, said Professor Chandana Jayaratne of the Department of Physics, University of Colombo.

Mars will reach its closest point to Earth on Tuesday (July 31), when the surfaces of the two planets are only 35.7 million miles (57.5 million kilometers) apart, since 2003.

He said you can also view the planets Saturn, Jupiter and Venus in a long arc across the sky from east to west shortly after sunset these days.

Professor Chandana Jayaratne said that for the general public to view this spectacular event, a night sky gazing camp would be set up at the Colombo University grounds from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm tomorrow.
