A contingent of nearly 250 persons from Sri Lanka is to attend the 18th Asian Games which will be held in Indonesia next month, reports say.
The Games is touted as the largest sports event in Asia and sources say that 185 Sri Lankan athletes have been selected to compete in 28 games along with 60 officials.
Certain members of this group are being sent at the expense of the National Olympic Committee, reports say.
The large entourage is also selected despite sports minister Faiszer Mustapha earlier stating that only those who face a chance of winning a medal would be sent.
Only 2 medals in Incheon
During the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, Sri Lanka was only able to get single Gold medal and a single bronze medal. Both medals were won from cricket.
The men's cricket team defeated Afghanistan men's cricket team to win the gold medal. while the Sri Lanka's women team won bronze.
Initially it was reported that 80 athletes and 46 officials attended the 2014 event. However, it was reported later that the number of officials had increased.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka says that a large contingent for the Asian Games was named to give everyone an opportunity.
The statement adds that they are hopeful of winning medals from Boxing, Weight Lifting, Kabaddi, Judo, Wushu, Rugby, Golf and Swimming events.
