He posed the question to supporters of the JO at a meeting.
Vijayakala Maheswaran is asking for an undemocratic dictator like Prabhakaran, while those in the south want a Hitler, he said, asking if anyone would be able to live and sleep without fear under such regimes.
The village police would not know what happened to those who would criticize either government, he said.
Referring to a remark by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa follower retired Maj. Ajith Prasanna that the government has blackmailed him, Welgama said he would not answer madmen.
Objective is a military regime
Meanwhile, speaking to the media yesterday, MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara said the forces behind Gotabhaya were very dangerous and were trying to form a military regime.
Gotabhaya is not a politician and he is only a military officer, he stressed.
The democratic forces – leftist parties, Frontline Socialist Party, JVP, TNA, UNP and some in the JO – are opposed to a military regime.
Retired military officers, upper middle class English-speaking people, professionals, industrialists and the wealthy cannot stage protests or wage strikes, they look for someone capable of curbing such things.
Such are the characteristics of the people who comprise Viyath Maga, and they don’t have the qualities of Mahinda Rajapaksa, whom we want as the leader, he said.
However, since he cannot give the leadership, we want somebody who has the leadership qualities of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Nanayakkara added.
