The 13th amendment to the constitution introduced in 1987 says schools should have trained teachers and teachers with teaching certificates only.
However, persons without those requirements have been recruited as teachers since, said the premier.
He was speaking today at the distribution of ‘Subhaga scholarships’ to schoolchildren who have excelled in new inventions, aesthetics and sport.
Need to standardize education
Speaking further, PM Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka should follow many other countries in standardizing education.
Also addressing the event was sports minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who said the ‘Subhaga scholarships’ would fill a void to felicitate schoolchildren who have excelled in various fields.
Children should make maximum use of such opportunities, he advised.
