Bar Association given 2.5 million from Bond Company! Featured

The Sri Lanka Bar Association is said to have obtained a sum of Rs. 2.5 million from Perpetual Treasuries (Pvt) Ltd, the company which is involved in the Central Bank Treasury bond scam.

The Law Asia Sri Lanka Golden Jubilee Conference income expenditure audit report which was submitted to the Executive Committee in 2017, clearly indicates that this amount was obtained from PTL for the conference held from August 12-15, 2016.

At the time this amount was obtained from PTL the President of the Bar Association was President’s Counsel Geoffrey Alagaratnam.

However, all organisational activities for this conference had been handled by the Organising Committee Chairman Upul Jayasooriya, who was the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Investment Board and the former President of the Bar Association.

 President’s Counsel Prasanna Jayawardena!

Further, the former Deputy President of the Bar Association and a deputy head of a financial subcommittee of the organising committee who was later appointed as a Supreme Court Judge, President’s Counsel Prasanna Jayawardena was also part of this group.

However, as Jayawardena became a Supreme Court Judge, he had resigned from his post in the committee, but ironically, later he became a member of the Presidential Commission appointed to investigate the bond scam.

In addition to the PTL sponsorship of Rs. 2.5 million for the Law Asia Sri Lanka Golden Jubilee Conference, Mobitel and Dimo had also given sponsorships for this conference. The Chief Guests at this conference was the President and Prime Minister.

However, although we attempted to obtain a comment from the current President of the Bar Association U.R. de Silva regarding this matter, it proved futile as he is said to be overseas.

Meanwhile, the current Secretary of the Bar Association Kaushalya Nawaratne when contacted, said that although he was unaware of such details, he was prepared to look in to this issue and take appropriate action regarding it in the future.
