Weapons found from Medirigiriya house (pics)

Based on intelligence information, the Medirigiriya Police had recovered a bomb and several items of war materials from a house belonging to a former soldier in 275 zone 6 in the New Town area. The soldier was also arrested.

Police had recovered five T56 magazines, 93 ammunition, two AP mines, three water bottles used by the military, 4 sets of military uniforms, 4 weapons holders, two pairs of military boots, military cap and several other items.

Only a mother lives in this house at present and she said of her two sons who served in the army, she had not seen one of them in five years while the other is living at his wife’s home in Polonnaruwa. He is said to be disabled having suffered gunshot injuries.

However, the Medirigiriya Police said 33-year-old Lahiru Dhanushka Karunasena residing in Somapura, Pulasthipura, Polonnaruwa is an army deserter and he had last served at a camp in Pulmudai.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Medirigiriya Police under the directives of the North Central Province Senior DIG Attorney L.P. Senarath Sandungahawatte and the Polonnaruwa SSP Laksiri Wijesena.
