Lakbima Newspapers to be closed! Featured

Lakbima Newspapers (Pvt.) Ltd., the publisher of ‘Lakbima’, is to be closed and the newspaper is to be brought under another company, say sources close to the newspaper.

Lakbima Newspapers Ltd. was launched by U.W. Sumathipala, father of Thilanga Sumathipala, as Sumathi Newspapers.

Recently, a director, Jagath Sumathipala, paid the employees and for the machinery and left the company, paving the way for a new company.

He is the owner of the building housing the newspaper publisher at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Colombo 14 and has asked the building back.

Therefore, Lakbima is to be relocated at a rented four-story building at Punchi Borella.

Without an owner

In this scenario, the company is without an owner, as Thilanga Sumathipala has publicly said that he had no ownership of the company.

However, last Tuesday, he suddenly made an appearance, summoned the editorial staffs of the weekly and daily and threatened them to accept appointment letters by the new company.

However, they are reluctant to serve in a new company without getting any compensation from Lakbima Newspapers.

They also want a five year job guarantee from the new company.
