Yapa, Premajayantha say unaware of Chinese funding for election campaign Featured

Former ministers Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Susil Premajayantha say they were unaware of a Chinese company having given money towards Mahinda Rajapaksa’s campaigning at the last presidential election.

They stressed this when some members of the SLFP’s group of 16 inquired from them about the ‘New York Times’ report that Rajapaksa was given more than seven million US dollars.

As general secretaries of the UPFA and the SLFP, Premajayantha and Yapa served as heads of a national steering committee of Rajapaksa’s election campaign.

Despite claims of so much money being given, Rajapaksa’s campaign is yet to pay many millions of rupees that it owes to the ITN and SLTB for advertising and buses obtained.

Meanwhile, joint opposition MP Kanchana Wijesekara, speaking to the media in Colombo, challenged anyone to prove that Rajapaksa had received money from a Chinese company.
