Five searching buried LTTE gold, nabbed

The Puwarasankulam Police had arrested five Muslim nationals yesterday (24), while they had been searching for gold buried by the LTTE during the war in the Pampamadu area in Vavuniya using a scanner.

Accordingly, five persons from the Vavuniya, Medawachchiya, Wattala and Puttalam areas aged between 30 to 40 years, were arrested yesterday.

Based on a tip-off received by the STF had conducted a raid and arrested suspects who were searching the area in Pampamadu at a spot where a former LTTE camp stood, with the aid of a scanning machine.

Upon interrogation, the suspects had told the police that they had engaged in the search for hidden gold, based on information that the LTTE had buried gold at their camp sites. A scanner used in detecting gold and other metals was also confiscated by the police.

The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court today, while further investigations are being conducted by the Puwarasankulam Police.
