JO to conditionally support JVP proposal Featured

The joint opposition has laid down a condition to support the JVP’s proposed 20th amendment to the constitution for the abolition of the executive presidency.

The JO wants an immediate dissolution of parliament after the passage of the amendment, for which its 54 MPs will play a crucial role.

The JVP was to move it as a private member’s motion on April 19, but president Maithripala Sirisena issued a gazette extraordinary on April 12, proroguing parliament.

The next term of parliament is due to begin on May 08.
