Army personnel arrested over raping nurse

A Captain of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police wanted in connection with the gang rape incident involving a nurse of a private hospital, was arrested yesterday by the Narahenpita Police.

The suspect, who was arrested 30-year-old Amith Kumara, is a father of one residing in Thulhiriya Alawwa.

According to the police, he had joined the Army in 2009 and had been posted to the Mannar Thal Adi and is said to be highly addicted to Cannabis (Ganja).

The Narahenpita Police had notified him to report to the police station, through the Army Headquarters and had arrested him there.

Police had also found an instrument used to inhale cannabis, an artificial sex object and commercial drugs, during their search of his room.

Several persons, including the lover of the nurse who was raped multiple times a 37-year-old Captain (Doctor) of the Army Military Medical Corps, the driver (Lance Corporal) of the Army Military Medical Corps Director, and an engineer from Moratuwa were earlier arrested in connection with this incident.

The investigations are being conducted by the Narahenpita Police led by its OIC- CI Gayan Prasanna, OIC Women’s and Children’s Bureau OIC- SI Janaki de Silva, SI Lalith Peththathanthri, Constables Sisira and Salinda, under the supervision of the Western Province Senior DIG Nandana Munasinghe, DIG Sajiva Medawatte, SP Nishantha Soysa and ASPPrasanna Alwis.
