Pillayan gets 36 seats at mini polls

The political party Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) under the leadership of the former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivaneshathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilleyan had secured 36 seats at the recently concluded LG elections.

The party had gained these seats having contested in eight LG bodies in the Batticaloa district. Pilleyan’s TMVP obtained 42,365 votes.

Pilleyan and several senior members of the party are currently facing allegations related to killings and abductions in the area during the post war period.

The former Chief Minister is currently on bail having been arrested over the killing of former MP Joseph Pararajasingham.

The General Secretary of the TMVP is also facing allegations over several abductions and the CID is conducting a comprehensive investigation on him.

Taking this situation into consideration, western countries have classified Sri Lanka as a country where voters are found to have a low level of political literacy.
