Only 4 punished in 23 yrs under anti-corruption act Featured

Only four persons have been prosecuted and punished under the bribery and corruption investigation commission act adopted by the Chandrika Kumaratunga regime 23 years ago, according to president Maithripala Sirisena.

President Sirisena says he has been informed this by the commission’s director general Sarath Jayamanne at a meeting of party leaders to discuss the next course of action with regard to the bond commission report.

Later, addressing a UPFA election rally in Matale, he said the main reason for this inaction was the highest level political interference of the bribery and corruption investigation during the Rajapaksa government.

Half of the politicians are corrupt

He went onto charge that half of the country’s politicians were corrupt.

They had plundered public money and assets in massive proportions by bond sales from 2008 to 2016 and by various other means, said the president.

‘Lost money will be recovered’

He said plans have been made to punish those plunderers as well as to recover the money lost to the country.

President Sirisena said that he would disregard political affiliations or positions when punishing the wrongdoers.
