Finance minister speaks about budget relief! Featured

The 3rd budget of the UNP-SLFP led coalition government will be presented to parliament today (09).

It will be the maiden budget to be presented by minister Mangala Samaraweera.

According to the appropriation bill, the total state expenditure for 2018 will be Rs. 3,982 billion.

Yesterday, Samaraweera announced pre-budget relief for several food items.

Pre-budget relief to cost Rs. 1,500 m

Speaking to the media at his ministry, he said the relief would cost Rs. 1,500 million per month.

He said that at the same time, a long term development plan would be in place.

Also speaking at the media briefing, state minister Eran Wickremaratne said a new revenue act would be introduced to grant relief to businesses, while the prices of certain vehicles would be brought down.

When asked if the pre-budget relief was announced to target the local government polls due in January, Samaraweera said they were two different things.

He remarked that both the UNP and the SLFP would emerge victorious at the election.
