Be mindful before getting into unknown waters

Prior to getting into unknown water bodies, people should be careful, the Police Headquarters urged the public.

Over 70% of drowning incidents occur due to the negligence of people when entering unknown water bodies, according to Police Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekara.

He said people visiting other areas should be cautious when entering water bodies in those areas unfamiliar to them.

Due to the lack of caution, many lives have been lost and this situation can only be prevented through the mindfulness of the people, he said.

He said due to such carelessness, eight people lost their lives in Laggala, Attonpola, while they had gone to bathe in the Thelgamuwa Oya at the Weddapenna port. Of the 12 people who had entered the water eight of them had been swept away while the bodies of two males and four females were recovered. However two more females are still missing, he said.
