JO refuses to talk with Maithri Featured

The joint opposition has informed the SLFP in writing that it has decided not to discuss contesting the upcoming election for local government institutions together with the SLFP.

The JO took the decision yesterday (01) at a meeting of SLFP MPs in the JO.

These MPs have been invited for a discussion tomorrow with regard to the LG polls, to be chaired by president Maithripala Sirisena.

Wants SLFP to end coalition with UNP

However, the JO has decided not to ally with the SLFP as long as that party continues in the coalition with the UNP.

At the meeting, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Dullas Alahapperuma and Keheliya Rambukwella said a positive signal should be sent to the president’s invitation, but Prasanna Ranatunga, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and others strongly objected to it.

Last night, SLFP MPs in the JO met at Aluthgamage’s home at Rajagiriya last night to further discuss the president’s invitation.

Mahinda should be appointed PM

However, that meeting did not last long after a member of the Rajapaksa family informed them not to go for talks with the SLFP until the president agreed to abandon dealings with the UNP and to appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa the prime minister.

However, both parties held secret talks in the past few days on contesting the LG polls under a common symbol, with both president Sirisena and ex-president Rajapaksa giving positive signals.

One discussion at Bandula Gunawardena’s home was attended by Gamini Lokuge, Pavitra Wanniarachchi, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Dullas Alahapperuma from the JO and susil Premajayantha representing the president.
