Anti-corruption high courts to hear cases daily

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed justice minister Thalatha Athukorale to take steps within six months to set up three high courts comprising as many members each to hear cases on a daily basis pertaining to bribery, corruption, money laundering, criminal misuse, criminal breach of trust, faking documents and other irregularities with a monetary value of more than Rs. five million.

The president’s instruction came after he received a report by the sectoral oversight committee on legal affairs and media yesterday (12), ‘Ravaya’ reports.

The committee recommends setting up the three anti-corruption high courts as per clause 105 (1) c of the constitution.

These courts will also take up cases pertaining to murder, attempted murder and rape.

Present at the handover of the report were members of the committee including Ajith P. Perera, M.A. Sumanthiran, the attorney general and the bribery commission director general.
