He was speaking at the 21th anniversary meeting of the CEB pensioners’ welfare association.
The minister said he has lodged a complaint against this satellite project that was carried out on the pretext of importing coal, but that he did not know when justice would be done.
Some of the parties to the fraud were arrested, but they soon got bail as they have enough swindled money with them, he said.
This is an unbelievable country, where a schoolgirl in Horana was remanded saying she stole eight coconuts, while a school principal was sentenced to eight years in prison for taking a bribe, but the fraudster who swindled Rs. 12,000 million from the CEB workers’ EPF got bail within two days, said Ranawaka.
He said therefore, making the judiciary independent would not be enough, and that they should be impartial, efficient and should show that justice is being done.
The minister said he was also sorry that justice was not served against those who bought horses for millions of rupees and helicopters.
If you steal, do steal in thousand millions
The message given is that if you steal or take bribes, don’t take Rs. 25,000 or Rs. 40,000 but swindle at least 3,000 or 4,000 million, he said.
He said the rascal who had committed the bond fraud has today decided that it was unnecessary for him to give evidence.
The nine per cent interest rate rose to 14 pc due to this bond fraud, which also caused a Rs. 95 billion to the state.
But, in the end, they cite various legal arguments and get freedom, he added.
