President, PM will take a decision regarding Ravi – S.B. Featured

The president and the prime minister will take a decision with regard to foreign minister Ravi Karunanayake after he gives a statement on August 02 to the presidential commission inquiring into the Central Bank bond scam, according to minister S.B. Dissanayake.

Dissanayake has told ‘Divaina’ that Karunanayake would answer the allegations that came to light before the commission previously.

The commission was told during its deliberations that Arjun Aloysius had bought a luxury apartment for Karunanayake for Rs. 165 million.

The chairman of the commission inquired from the chief financial officer of Global Logistics if Rs. 145 million out of that was black money.

The officer admitted the money in question had not been in record anywhere, but had been kept secretly in a safe of the company which is a family business of Karunanayake.

It was Global Logistics chairperson Lakshmi Kanthan who had given him the money in February 2015, when the CB bond sale took place, the officer said in answer to a question raised by additional solicitor general Yasantha Kodagoda.

He went onto say that he was first given Rs. 70 million and Rs. 75 million later to be kept in the safe.

Sell the apartment in auction

Meanwhile, the consumer rights protection organization asks the government to show its good governance practices by removing Karunanayake from his portfolio for having committed this financial fraud.

The apartment in question should be sold in auction and use the money to provide relief for the disaster affected people, civil society organizations and trade unions told the government at a media briefing in Colombo yesterday (30).
