If no election, Provincial Councils under Governor Featured

If by some law the Provincial Council elections are postponed, these Provincial Councils will come under the purview of the Governor, said Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya.

He further stated that after the official term of the Provincial Councils have ended and elections are not staged on the scheduled date, its powers automatically fall upon the Governor. In addition the functions of the Provincial Councils will be carried out under the Provincial Council Chairman and Secretary, he said.

The North Central, Eastern and Wayamba Provincial Councils terms end next September and most likely the elections will be postponed to next year according to a Cabinet decision to hold all Provincial Council elections at the same time.

Based on the Elections Commissioner’s theory, political analysts have determined that until the elections are held, the functions of the Provincial Councils should be under the purview of the Governor.
