‘Targeting mosquitoes’ strategy comes into question Featured

Success of the current strategy by the National Dengue Control Programme that focuses on ‘targeting the mosquitoes' has come into question.

Coordinated at the highest level, it involves even the police and the armed forces.

However, experts note that the Breteau Index (BI) which is an index of the presence of mosquito breeding sites has continued to fall until 2012, but dengue cases continued to rise.

The graph above shows the quarterly cases and the BI for Colombo district.

In Singapore too, when there were plenty of mosquito breeding premises (Premises Index in 1966 was 50), there were less than 50 cases of dengue per 100,000 of the population, according to dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever statistics for 1966 – 2005.

However, when the Premises Index was brought down to about two by 2005, there were as many as 300 dengue cases per 100,000 of the population.
