Method of preserving banana leaves Featured

The Senior Lecturer of the Weligaththa Rural Technical Institute, Dr. Sujatha Weerasinghe has found a method of seasoning and preserving banana leaves, through research and testing.

She pointed out that it could be developed as a business as there are ample supplies of banana leaves available within the country.

The Hambantota Rural Technical Institute is prepared to offer training to anyone interested in this technology.

With the decision taken by the government to ban plastic lunch sheets, the demand for banana leaves has risen.
Dr. Weerasinghe pointed out that banana leaves was available in large quantities in areas such as Hambantota, Monaragala, Embilipitiya and Udawalawe areas.

According to her, while generally banana leaves are seasoned for packing lunch packs by burning them over a flame, this new method is less cumbersome.
