Army chief as CDSl; Boniface or Mahesh to succeed him? Featured

The president has appointed Army chief Lt. Gen. Krishantha de Silva, the senior most among the three armed forces commanders, to the position of chief-of-defence-staff with a promotion to the rank of general, defence ministry sources say.

Accordingly, de Silva is due to assume duties in the new position tomorrow (27).

The position of CDS remains vacant following the retirement of Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilake on June 15.

De Silva’s extended tenure as the Army commander ends in August, and it is unclear if he will remain in that job too, or a replacement will be made.

Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya served as the Army chief for several months, after being appointed the CDS.
