Army chief turns down president’s offer Featured

Army chief Lt. Gen. Krishantha de Silva, the most senior among the commanders of the armed forces, has declined to accept an offer by president Maithripala Sirisena to be the vacant chief of defence staff, ‘Ravaya’ reports quoting defence ministry sources.

Instead, he wants to be given a fourth extension as the Army commander.

CoS, Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilake retired on June 15, and the position still remains vacant due to de Silva’s rejection.

As a result, the government is likely to close down the office of the CoS, say the sources.

Both the Army and Navy commanders are presently on service extensions.
