Rs. 11.5 loss if UN rejects Lankan peacekeepers! Featured

The government is set to suffer a Rs. 11.5 billion loss if the United Nations does not accept Sri Lankan armed forces personnel for peace enforcement in Mali, as that sum has gone to prepare them for the mission, including the purchase of armoured vehicles, weapons etc.

The UN is due to send a team to the island on June 20 for an observation tour of the mission.

However, that is unlikely to happen as it has rejected a list of personnel to be chosen as peacekeepers because they were involved in operations during the war in the north.

Military sources say inexperienced personnel cannot be sent for peace enforcement duties, although the UN expects them not to have got involved in operational duties.
