List of Lankan peacekeepers not received well by UN Featured

A list of Sri Lankan peacekeepers to be sent for peace enforcement in Mali has not been received well by the UN, military sources say.

Sri Lanka is to supply armoured vehicles and weapons for the troops too.

Out of a list of 400 sent for selection only 40 have been chose for a quota of 212.

The sources say most of the rejected personnel are those involved in operations during the period Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka was the Army commander.

Col. Samantha Wickremasena, who was to command the Sri Lankan peacekeepers and sent to Mali for advance observation, too, is among the rejected personnel.

The UN is due to send a team to Sri Lanka on June 20 to inspect if the equipment for the troops is up to its standards.

So far, 82 UN peacekeepers have died in Mali.
