Japan hands over emergency relief items for disaster victims

Kenichi Suganuma, Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka and F. Tanaka, chief representative of JICA Sri Lanka officially handed over emergency relief items from Japan to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake and Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa at the Ministry of Disaster Management on 31st of May to be distributed among the victims of the heavy rainfall.

Suganuma expressed his deepest condolences to the people who lost their lives in the disaster. In responding to his message, Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa expressed his appreciation for the immediate support extended by the Japanese Government through JICA.

Following this supply of the emergency relief goods, the Japanese government will dispatch a team of experts to investigate the prevention of secondary disasters, recovery and rehabilitation to have series of discussions with relevant ministries in order to prevent further disasters.

Moreover, the mission will seek future cooperation in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction.

The expert team will be in the country from 2nd to 10th of June.
