Rs. 45 m vehicle for Jayampathy! Featured

Heated debate ensued in parliament yesterday (25) after a supplementary estimated was tabled to buy a vehicle worth Rs. 45 million for Dr. Jayampathy Wickremaratne, coordinator of the steering committee of the Constitutional Council.

A national list MP of the UNP, he is also parliamentary affairs coordinating secretary to prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Joint opposition leader Dinesh Gunawardena told the House that vehicles were to be bought for CC members and officials.

Joining in, Bandula Gunawardena said this came after the House finance committee decided two days ago to suspend a supplementary estimate approved for the purchase of vehicles for ministers.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella objected, saying the vehicles would be bought for the ministries, not for the personal use of the ministers, and asked the opposition not to mislead the public as it always did.

‘Can public money be spent like this’

Chief opposition whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the public was already having a question to ask over the purchase of vehicles for ministers, which they would deal with separately.

Added to that, vehicles are now to be bought for members of a committee tasked with formulating a new constitution.

Can public money be spent like this? he asked.
