He made the remark at a protest in front of Colombo Fort railways station yesterday (23) by the national movement to secure freedom for political prisoners.
Karunaratne charged the government would not release political prisoners, but was giving freedom to murderers, who had committed crimes by claiming themselves to be war heroes.
The protesters demanded freedom for political prisoners, justice for the missing persons and a return of civilian land taken over by the military during the war.
They held a candlelight vigil to remember the dead.
