Owner of collapsed building in Wellawatte arrested

The owner of the building that collapsed in Wellawatte close to Savoy cinema, known as Sajahan was arrested yesterday.

The 64-year-old had surrendered to police yesterday through his lawyer and was later taken into custody and is due to be produced in Court.

The owner Sajahan is said to be a follower of Minister Fawzy and is said to have been operating a garment factory in Aluthgama.

He is also a shareholder of a renowned company that produces men’s wear.

Sans approval or quality standards:

As a result of the building collapse, one person was killed and 21 others were injured.

Allegations were levelled that the said building had not met proper building standards.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation said approval had not been obtained for the construction of this building.

Approval had only been obtained for the construction of a three storeyed building but it consisted of five floors and while a further two floors were being added to the building it had collapsed.
