The Thera and his disciples had stopped at a fuel station opposite a mosque at Porayaya on the Kurunegala Dambulla road at the end of the Badagamuwa forest reserve when a team of police officers in several vehicles had surrounded a vehicle suspecting Gnanasara Thera to be in it.
However, Gnanasara Thera had been in the vehicle behind that and had got off the vehicle and questioned the police if they had a warrant for his arrest.
By then several other STF teams too had arrived at the scene and had obstructed Gnanasara Thera’s vehicle with several sand trucks preventing his vehicle from moving.
However, as the police did not possess a warrant for the arrest of the monk, they had to retreat.
Order by the President
This operation was headed by CI Wickramasinghe of the CCD, who had notified Gnanasara Thera that the order for his arrest was issued by the President.
According to security forces internal sources, over 200 police officers had been deployed for the arrest of the monk while the assistance of the STF too had been sought.
An attempt by police to arrest the leader of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera upon returning to Colombo from a Buddhist sermon held at the Kurunegala Ibbagamuwa Sulugal Viharaya, was unsuccessful.
