Geetha’s appeal to be taken up today Featured

A three-member Supreme Court bench will today (12) take up an appeal filed by Geetha Kumaratunga against a Court of Appeal ruling that she had not right to hold the Galle district MP seat due to her being a citizen of both Sri Lanka and Switzerland.

She seeks an interim order to prevent any action with regard to her parliamentary position until the completion of the hearing of her petition.

Notice has also been issued for the five persons who took her to the CA over her dual citizenship and MP seat to appear before court today.

Meanwhile, the Elections Commission is due to meet at 11.00 this morning to discuss a notification it has received from the secretary general of parliament to appoint Piyasena Gamage to the MP seat that has fallen vacant following Kumarasinghe’s disqualification.

When contacted, an Election Commission official told Sri Lanka Mirror that they would also receive today the Galle returning officer’s notification to fill the vacancy.
