Dayasiri as cabinet spokesman from SLFP? Featured

Pursuant to a decision to appoint a cabinet spokesman to represent the SLFP, sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara has been nominated to the position, BBC Sinhala Service says.

It quoted UPFA general secretary Mahinda Amaraweera as saying a minister from the SLFP would join Rajitha Senaratne and Gayantha Karunatilake at the next cabinet news briefing.

Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, who had been asked to accept the position, told Sri Lanka Mirror that he had vehemently turned down the offer.

Several SLFP ministers had asked the president to remove Senaratne as the cabinet spokesman.

That followed a dispute Senaratne had with John Seneviratne over his remark that the president had asked Sarath Fonseka at a cabinet meeting to accept the Army commander or a similar top security forces position.

Seneviratne claimed that Senaratne had announced as a cabinet decision what the president had said jokingly.

He went onto accuse the cabinet spokesman of announcing his personal views, not decisions by the cabinet, at the cabinet media briefing.

Amaraweera said Senaratne would continue be a co-cabinet spokesman, adding that neither Duminda Dissanayake nor he would be the cabinet spokesman from the SLFP.
