However, sources from the UNP headquarters Sirikotha say that tomorrow’s reshuffle will only affect the SLFP ministers.
Political analysts say that the cabinet reshuffle will be held just to uphold the president’s word given during a meeting with heads of media institutions on April 20. During the meeting, president Maithripala Sirisena stated that the cabinet reshuffle will take place before the next poya day which is the Vesak poya.
PM down with flu, cold
Upon contacting a highly placed official at the UNP Headquarters - Sirikotha, we were told that there will be no cabinet reshuffle at the UNP tomorrow.
Further replying to our queries on reports concerning the Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s health, he added that the PM had caught a cold and flu during his recent visit to Badulla and was on leave for two days.
We also contacted the Director of Information - Dr. Ranga Kalansooriya after all media was summoned tomorrow (09). Speaking, Dr. Kalansooriya said that the president had summoned all media to issue a special statement with regard to international Vesak festival in Colombo.
However, he added that he is not aware of a cabinet reshuffle scheduled for held tomorrow.
Meanwhile, minister Faizer Mustapha has inquired of a possible cabinet reshuffle from the president. Noting that he is scheduled to go overseas during the speculated time, the minister has asked the president whether he should stay back if a cabinet reshuffle is to take place. In response, the president has asked minister Mustapha to go on the tour as he would not be affected by the reshuffle.
During a recent meeting held at the residence of UPFA General Secretary - Mahinda Amaraweera, a group of SLFP ministers have strongly urged to hold a cabinet reshuffle, ’Sri Lanka Mirror’ learns.
However, it was singular that SLFP General Secretary - Duminda Dissanayake was absent during the discussion.
'stuff on websites'
After reports of a possible cabinet reshuffle emerged, the phones of the Presidential secretariat have started ringing nonstop and when several ministers have inquired of this from the president, he has guffawed and evaded the questions by saying ‘those are stuff on websites’. However, we learn that he has not directly rejected the reports either.
SLFP to meet at 7pm
Meanwhile, president Maithripala Sirisena and ministers from the SLFP are due to have a decisive meeting tonight (08), starting at 7.00 pm.
